Iron-based products are typically the cause of these stains.
Lawn fertilizer, staples, nails hairpins, BBs, etc are the most common objects that stain swimming pools.
The “Spotting Bag” by United Chemical is an effective product for removing the stain. Sanding can also remove the stains.
I advise caution if you acid-wash the pool. Doing so will leave the surface rough.
