Cracked and Leaking Sta-Rite pool pump

July 21, 2022

If you own a Sta-Rite variable speed swimming pool pump, you may have encountered a common problem: a crack developing along the seal plate body, leading to water leakage. This issue has been increasingly reported since 2019.

How to Identify the Problem

One of the first signs that your Sta-Rite pump may be suffering from this problem is water spraying near the stainless steel band around the pump. If you notice this, remove the band and inspect the area for a crack along the seal plate.

Why Does This Happen?

Sta-Rite pumps are widely used and highly regarded, but this cracking issue has become a concern. Based on observations and industry knowledge, here are a few potential causes:

  1. Manufacturing Defect: There might be a flaw in the mold used by Pentair (the parent company of Sta-Rite). This defect could lead to weak points in the seal plate, making it more susceptible to cracking.
  2. Dirty Filters: If your pool filter isn’t cleaned regularly, it can create back pressure that puts extra strain on the pump. This additional pressure can lead to stress on the seal plate, eventually causing it to crack.
  3. High Priming Mode: The factory default settings on the Sta-Rite pump include a priming mode that operates at 3450 RPMs. If the pump’s maximum speed isn’t adjusted to align with your pool’s plumbing specifications, it can place excessive strain on the entire system—including the pump, filter, and plumbing—each time it starts up. Over time, this added stress can lead to cracks in the seal plate.

What’s the Solution?

The good news is that you don’t need to replace the entire pump. Instead, you only need to replace the cracked section of the pump. Our team is ready to assist you with this repair, ensuring your pool pump returns to optimal performance without the need for a costly full replacement.
